Strumming Along

My aunt and cousin are visiting from New Mexico. We had a big family get together at my uncle's house, though my mom ended up not coming because she has "office plague" and was still in the "wishing she was dead" phase of the illness when they should have been on the road (she sounded truly dreadful on the phone Friday). I was terrible and didn't get many photos taken while I was there, except when my cousin (who is actually closer to Luke's age (11 year difference) than mine (17 year difference)) was showing Luke some tricks on the guitar. Luke had never handled a guitar before; I think he's in love. Thanks, Tyler, for being so patient with him!

Tyler also writes and records his own music. You can hear his latest single on Spotify and iTunes:

What's In Store? Theme-a-licious 2013 and More

What's in store for the blog in 2013? So glad you asked! We'll be sticking with some favorite features, there will be an old returning feature, and there will be at least one new item. The big new one is:

My wonderful friend Heather ran a set of monthly stitching themes in 2012 (with Mal Reynolds as mascot). I wasn't really feeling the stitching thing at the beginning of last year, so I chose not to participate. This year, I think I'll give it a shot, even though I'm not as enamored of the 2013 mascot as most of my friends (never even seen a Dr. Who episode; I know, I know, it's on the someday list). You can read more about the monthly themes at this post on her blog.

I've worked out that most of the monthly themes will work with my nearly finished fairy, or I can start the second fairy in the series, and still meet most of the requirements. (Partially cheating, I know, but I want to get her done!) We'll see what else I can come up with along the way to stitch on. I mean, it's not like I don't have a ton of partially begun pieces sitting in the basement or something, right? ::rolls eyes:: I hope you'll join me in doing something fun and creative in the new year!

Returning in 2013 after a one year hiatus will (hopefully) be my monthly round ups. I found there were a few times during 2012 that some of the information I routinely recorded there would have come in handy, but I had neglected to record it anywhere. Also, in order to avoid at least three different monthly features, I have decided to combine the monthly round up with my "Pinspirations" for each month. Since most of what I try from Pinterest are recipes, it fit perfectly with the new foods, restaurants, and recipes question on the round up, and any of the other few things that aren't food related can go underneath (I've created a new round up question just for that).

I will be sticking with Wordless Wednesday on a weekly basis. I will also be continuing with Project 365 into 2013, hopefully with a little more conscious thought and commitment behind it than I did this year. I haven't decided if I want to post a summary of those photos weekly or monthly (or not at all). Still debating. I hate for everything to bunch up at the end of one month and/or the beginning of the next, but doing them on, say, the 15th, doesn't make much sense either. Still thinking on that one.

I also imagine there will be quite a bit of whining complaining documenting our experiences with Luke's psychoeducational evaluation and any resulting fallout treatment adjustments that are needed based on the results. From what I can tell, it will not be a short or easy road. Please think good thoughts for us regarding the upcoming testing.

Is there anything you would like to see more (or less) of on my blog? Let me know, and I'll see what I can do.

2012 Project 365 Complete

Finally got caught up on my 2012 edition of Project 365. I will say that my heart was just not in it the way it originally was in 2009. I didn't learn as much, or even try to, which is rather ironic since I had nothing but time on my hands for much of the year (note: depression sucks). I missed many more days than I should have, and most days were just that I happened to pick up a camera, not that I necessarily made it a point to take a picture or document my day; some days I did, but not all, or even most. And, since everyone seems to really enjoy them (particularly my parents), I think I'm going to give it a shot again in 2013. I'm also going to try and be better about actually posting the photos to my 365 Photo Blog. Here's hoping next year will be better! But for now, please enjoy these monthly mosaic recaps (click each to biggify; mosaics made in Picasa).

How can we rock without Dick Clark?

I can't believe this will be the first New Year's Eve without Dick Clark on television in my lifetime. He started his New Year's show in 1974, and he did miss one year when he had his stroke. But otherwise, he has always been there, until now. Makes me glad I stayed up last year to watch, not knowing it would be his last.

Sadly, sometime yesterday (in a fit of completing it's dastardly resolutions, no doubt), my body realized that, if it hurried, there was still time to get dreadfully sick before the end of the year! Yay. Thus, the birth of 2013 here on the east coast of the United States will also have to do without me for the first time in many many years. At this point, I think I'll be lucky to make it to 10 PM. I just hope this is not a sign of things to come for the next year.

Wishing you all a wonderful, happy, healthy 2013!

Pinterest Inspirations - December 2012

Well, I should have had a few more for the month, but this will do. Starting in January 2013, I will be incorporating my "Pinspirations" into my (hopefully returning) monthly round up.

DIY: sequin ornament - Made one of these in about 2-3 hours. It looks fabulous! It took about 300 pins/sequins to do one 3-inch ball using 8mm and 10mm sequins. I also recommend the 3/4" pins over the 1/2" pins.

Praline Cookies by Plain Chicken - These were very easy and quite tasty. I do think I will tweak the recipe a touch next time. I might use 2-4 Tbsp less flour (it was hard to get it all in there, and the cookies tasted overly floury to me), and I think I would switch to a full cup of brown sugar (rather than 1/2 cup brown and 1/2 cup white). I would also add a pinch of salt.

Crock-Pot Thick & Creamy Hot Chocolate - This was so rich that we almost couldn't drink it. I served 10-ish oz of it, and we could only drink 6-8. Though I've never had authentic drinking chocolate, this is very close to what I imagine that is like. It is good, but super rich, and it makes a ton!!

Snowman Donuts and Reindeer Donuts - As soon as I saw these, I knew I had to do them for Christmas!! They turned out super cute, just like the picture!! I used mini chocolate chips for the snowman eyes and mouth, and they were a pain to place and get to "stick". The white sugar pearls on the chocolate donuts were much easier to work with. Not sure if there is a black equivalent of sugar pearls, but if so, I would try those next time instead.

Snowman from wreaths - Mine wasn't quite this elaborate (no top hat, makeshift scarf actually made of solid red handkerchiefs), but it was still very cute hanging on our basement door. I connected the wreaths using brown pipe cleaners.
